The bridge, in its time, was an engineering marvel. It was 12.5 m (41 ft) above sea level and is 6,776 ft (2,065 m) long across the Pamban channel. It took about 45 minutes to open this bridge with the help of levers.
The original Pamban Bridge was a narrow-gauge railway bridge, with a single track placed along its length. It was the first sea bridge in India and was the longest sea bridge in our country. It maintained its reputation until the Bandra-Worli Sea Link in Mumbai was opened to the public in 2010.
Challenges and Repairs of Pamban Bridge Rameshwaram

It was due to the detection of cracks in one of the spans. This called for continuous inspection and maintenance before the reopening in March 2019.
In the history of Pamban bridge, it had to go through many repairs. Even the bascule section of the bridge was weakened because of high corrosion. Because of all this, the old Pamban Bridge was declared unsafe and closed for railways in December 2022.
The Dhanushkodi Pamban Bridge Tragedy

The New Pamban Bridge
After the closure of the old Pamban bridge Rameshwaram, the Indian government realized that this closure should not be permanent. That’s why they decided to rebuild the Rameshwaram Pamban bridge in a totally different manner. This project was given to Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) with a budget of 535 crores. The foundation was given in November 2019 and by November 2024, the new bridge was completed. The bridge is all set to be inaugurated on 6th April 2025, by prime minister Narendra Modi on Ram Navami.

- Vertical Lift Span: The bridge features an electro-mechanical vertical lift span that can be lifted in five minutes. Thereby allowing complete freedom for maritime navigation.
- Enhanced Navigational Clearance: The new bridge has increased the clearance to 22 meters above sea level. It gives much more space for bigger ships than the old bridge which had only 1.5-meter clearance.
- High-Speed Limits: The new bridge has a speed limit raised to 75 km/h from the previous limit of 10 km/h.
- High Durability: The bridge withstands the saline coastal environment because of the use of stainless-steel reinforcement and composite sleepers that improve durability.
